The hot liquor tank is possibly the simplest component of the entire brewery. It's an old sankey keg with the top cut off. When we want water above ambient temperature, we light a fire underneath and wait until the temperature reaches the desired mark. From that time, we pump the water to where it is needed.
In most RHEMS systems, the hot liquor tank not only supplies hot water for the brewery but has coils and performs the same task as our mini-exchanger.
Because our mini-exchanger is a bit on the under-powered side, we'll bring some water up close to the temperature we wish to run the mini-exchanger and fill the it with water from the hot liquor tank. It's hands-on but hey, we need to do something!
Construction Details
Building the hot liquor tank was one of the easier pieces of the brewery. It was the first sanke keg suitable for boiling we had so, for one batch, it was our boil kettle, too.
First we took the top off and then we put in the valve. That's pretty much all there is to this piece of equipment.
See the details about the construction of the kettle here.
